The EOS 60D has a number of impressive features including an 18MP sensor, Full HD 1080p movie capability with full manual control and a selection of frame rates and Canon's iFCL metering system. The LCD has a 3:2 aspect ratio and the same 1,040k pixel resolution as the 550D but is fully pivotal. The high ISO offers an upper limit of ISO 6400 and ISO 12800 in expanded mode. Similar to the earlier 50D it has a 9-point AF system and dual DIGIC 4 processors.

The lighter body can feel plasticky and some of the controls are a bit fiddly. However, the 60D still feels solid and comfortable to use. The articulated LCD screen is brilliant quality and allows you to view the screen from a multitude of angles. It is user-friendly and handles well, with rubberised areas strategically placed on the handgrip, back plate and left side facilitating non-slip grip. It does not have a facility for fine-tuning autofocus for individual lenses which is disappointing and also lacks one-touch access to white balance settings. Image quality is nevertheless excellent for both stills and HD movies. While some feel that the 60D does not quite meet the requirements of a serious, semi-pro DSLR most amateur enthusiasts will be more than happy. It is an all-rounder that offers a lot more than an entry-level DSLR.

The 60D has an aluminium chassis with a polycarbonate resin shell, strengthened with fibreglass. This makes it lightweight but robust. It has Canon's Quick Control menu which is displayed on the main LCD. Pressing the 'Q' button gives you access to ISO, exposure compensation, drive mode, picture style, white balance, auto lighting optimisation levels, image quality settings, custom functions and even a virtual horizon display. It offers in-camera editing, the ability to add creative effects such as Toy Camera and Soft Focus after having taken the shots, as well as the option to process RAW images and convert them to JPEGs. The iFCL metering system comprised of a 63-zone dual layer metering sensor analyses Focus, Colour, and Luminance information, ensuring accurate and consistent metering. An HDMI connection allows footage and images to be played back in High Definition on an HDTV.
